I was a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist for 25 years, based out of Cambridge, UK.
In that time, I saw thousands of patients, around 50 patients a week, for 25 years…
I helped people with any and every type of psychological difficulty out there: abuse, phobias, depression, trauma…I even worked as a forensic psychologist in criminal cases in my spare time.
But do you know what one of the hardest conditions to treat was?
The people who, when they walked into my consulting room, sat down, took a deep breath and explained what was wrong, I just knew would be a bit more challenging?
Surprisingly, it was people with a fear of being sick. If you're reading this right now, I assume someone like you.
I know, it’s shocking. I’d worked with criminals, people with schizophrenia, people with years of trauma and abuse, and one of the hardest conditions to treat was a fear of being sick??
Wow.
But you know what? It wasn’t actually hard to treat. It’s just that the traditional methods didn’t work. The traditional therapeutic methods myself and many other therapists (who still believe you can only 'manage' this phobia) had been trained in helped people initially feel GREAT, but fairly quickly - after 3 months or so - they'd be back on my therapist's couch feeling pretty rubbish again.
I wasn't going to settle with this. After seeing hundreds of people with emetophobia already, I understood how much this fear impacted their lives, the daily torture, the anxiety, the lengths people go to avoid encountering being sick or seeing someone else be sick.
I knew there must be another way. If people could overcome years of depression or years of trauma, there must be a way to help people with this fear live normal, happy lives.
I had to come up with something different. Something that would help people with this fear not just feel a bit better, or manage their fear, but fully overcome it. Something that would empower them to realise they can live a life without this anxiety and find their true selves.
And pretty soon, I noticed similarities in all the emetophobes I treated. I isolated these similarities and realised these were the causes, these were what, essentially, ‘created’ the phobia.
I realised the phobia wasn’t caused by a traumatic event in the emetophobes’ childhood, it wasn’t a nasty bout of illness. If it was, everyone would develop a fear of being sick, but the majority of people, especially men, don’t care about vomit.
Even better, it wasn’t something they were born with, it wasn’t something wrong in their brain or something they had to live with for the rest of their lives.
They could be free of it.
So we started trying out a method to cure emetophobes, the ‘beta’ version of the programme you’re going to see today.
And we realised it was actually helping people. They didn’t come back to my therapist’s couch 6 months later saying their fear had returned. In fact, we stopped hearing from them, and, naturally, I started to get a little worried…
Until one day, I got a call at the doctor’s office where I worked.
"Rob, we haven’t spoken in a while, but I just wanted to say thank you. My kid was just sick and I was able to clean it up. I didn’t feel any anxiety. I could never have done this a year ago."
And then, another one...
"Thank you Rob, I can’t tell you how grateful I am to you for changing my life, I’m on holiday, I just ate oysters for the first time! I can’t believe it!"
And the calls kept coming. The reason we weren’t hearing from people wasn’t because they’d given up or had gone to find some other therapist, it was because they were actually out there enjoying their lives, they were out there ‘thriving’ (which is the inspiration for the name, thanks to my very clever daughter Róisín for coming up with it!)
I won’t lie, they were wonderful phone-calls to receive, but I emphasised to everyone that in fact, I did nothing, I didn’t ‘make’ them better. I just showed them how they could make themselves better, I showed them how they can feel so empowered they’re able to very easily change the causes of the phobia themselves, which is an especially important thing to do because this fear can leave you feeling so powerless and hopeless.
I continued treating people with this method, tweaking it, refining it and adapting it as more and more people came in to my office to consult for this fear.
Based on this real feedback and treatment of emetophobes, myself and my amazing research assistant, Charlotte, a PhD at Cambridge University, UK, started building the programme into the one you see today.
